Social movements are organized community efforts that aim to reach a certain set of goals; networks of people who share some basis of collective identity / shared values and engage in political or cultural conflicts. - Dictionary of Human Geography & Mario Daini, adapted by Michelle Xie [1]

Examples of social movements

Climate justice

  • There are many groups present in the climate justice movement, ranging from grassroots local groups (i.e. Friday's for future chapters) to NGO's (i.e. Greenpeace)

Black lives matter

  • Black lives matter aims to "eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes."-Black Lives Matter. [2] The movement was started in 2013 in response to Trayvon Martin’s murderer.

Idle No More

  • Idle No More started in 2012, "among Treaty People in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta protesting the Canadian government’s dismantling of environmental protection laws, endangering First Nations who live on the land." -Idle No More [3]

#MeToo

  •  #MeToo is a movement against sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and rape culture, in which people share publicize their experiences of sexual abuse or sexual harassment. The phrase "Me Too" was first used on social media in 2006. [4]
